Redward Background
Redward Red Poll Stud was established
in 2000 with the purchase of three mature age cows
from proven bloodlines.
Our aim then, as it still is now, was to produce quality,
structurally correct beef cattle which could then
go on to satisfy various markets and perform under
any conditions.
Prior to our purchases much research
was undertaken to determine which breed of cattle
we were going to use as the basis of our stud. Our
main criteria were meat quality, temperament, sustainability
and cost, both initial and on going, compared to potential
returns. From our perspective the results showed the
Red Poll breed to be clearly ahead in our requirements.
- They do not lay down excessive fat, a great asset
in our health conscious society, yet under Feedlot
conditions they can still perform to standard.
- We have found the Red Polls to be very placid
and what better way to test that theory than have
relative beginners (ourselves!) handle and work
with them.
- During the tough conditions in our area over
the past 4 years the cattle have performed remarkably
well and the mothers have continued to make sure
their calves are paramount. Our weights barely altered
and we continually had a 100% pregnancy strike rate.
- The Red Polls being naturally polled is another plus.
Amongst our initial female purchases we selected
an 8 month old bull calf, still on his mother, to
be our foundation sire. He certainly did not let us
down, not only was he a Supreme Champion himself some
of his progeny have also gone on to be Champions and
Supreme Exhibits.

He has now been sold to another breeder and
is continuing to produce quality calves across
various bloodlines.
There are currently twenty eight breeders
in our herd and we are always looking to improve
our cattle and diversify our bloodlines.
With our small herd our show ring success
could be somewhat limited however we have
managed to be relatively successful in a short
period of time. We have had Broad Ribbon successes
at each Royal in which we have exhibited;
Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney & Canberra.
We try to show as much as possible both locally
and interstate as a means to promote our breed
and beef cattle in general. This is a useful
tool to compare with other breeds and take
the opportunity to have independent opinions
of our cattle.
During our show preparation we remain very
conscious of the fact that our cattle will
have to transition from the somewhat comfortable
show environment to tougher commercial conditions,
whether this is on our own property or when
they are on sold.

Over the past few years we have enjoyed learning
as much as we can, and continue to do so, and have
received a lot of generous help along the way. We
actively participate in field days, feature shows
and information sessions and really enjoy doing so.
We are in the Johnes JD Map program with an MN1 status
and Group Breedplan which was completed for the first
time in 2004.
Visitors to REDWARD Stud are always very welcome.
